Cat Swallowed String or Ribbon

Chibi grey tabby kitten with string hanging from mouth — educational guide for swallowed string or ribbon in cats

Important

Swallowed string, yarn, ribbon, and similar linear objects can cause serious intestinal damage in cats. Contact a veterinarian for guidance, especially if string is visible from the mouth or anus.

Overview

Cats often play with and swallow linear objects like string, yarn, dental floss, or ribbon. Unlike some solid objects, linear foreign bodies can cause particular concern because of the way they may move through the intestines. A veterinarian can help assess risk based on what was swallowed, whether any string is visible, and your cat's symptoms.

When emergency veterinary care may be appropriate

  • String or ribbon hanging from your cat's mouth or anus — do not pull it
  • Repeated vomiting or gagging
  • Loss of appetite, lethargy, or abdominal pain
  • You saw your cat swallow a long string or ribbon
  • Diarrhea or changes in litter box habits after ingestion
  • Symptoms develop hours or days after ingestion

What to tell your veterinarian

  • What object was swallowed and approximate length
  • Time since ingestion
  • Whether any string is visible from mouth or anus
  • Any vomiting, gagging, or behavior changes
  • Your cat's appetite and energy level
  • Age, weight, and indoor/outdoor status

What not to do

  • Do not pull string if it is visible from the mouth or anus
  • Do not assume the object will pass without veterinary input
  • Do not induce vomiting unless directed by a veterinarian
  • Do not wait days if your cat is showing symptoms
